Four Basic Swimming Pool Maintenance Tips to Consider:
- Skim Regularly – Skimming your pool with a net on a consistent basis eliminates the need for deep cleanings later. From leaves and bugs to dirt and other debris, try to catch contaminants before they sink. Also, don’t forget to clean out the strainer baskets and the automatic skimmers (the device in your pool wall) with a hose. Strainer baskets keep the pool’s water flow normal and can even reduce the amount of chlorine you need to use. Manually skim the pool 2-3 times per week and check the baskets and in-pool skimmers weekly to make sure they are not clogged.
- Check the Water Level – The more you use and clean your pool, the less water there will be. This can be problematic if the water drops below the skimmer. If you notice an unusually low amount of water in your pool, grab your garden hose and refill it to normal levels.
- Watch the pH Level – There are a couple of types of over-the-counter testing kits that are affordable, accurate, and easy to use. Try to keep your pH level between 7.4 and 7.8. Anything below 7 means the water is too acidic and anything over 8 generally means that it lacks necessary cleansing chemicals. Stay healthy by maintaining regular pH levels. Similar to skimming, this should be done 2-3 times per week. We recommend doing them both at the same time to make it easier to remember.
- Consult a Professional – For jobs of any magnitude, it’s best to consult a pro before going in without doing your research. From inspections and repairs to openings and closings, Harbor Pools & Patios is happy to help you get your pool ready for summer. We also will handle the dirty work, such as cleaning and chlorinating.
Although we have no problem empowering you to take care of your maintenance, we understand that it can be a frustrating, time-consuming task. That’s why we take pride in handling the dirty work, while you sit back and enjoy your day.
